The Percustra project consists of six weekly workshops, led by the musicians of the ensemble, from September to June in the instrumentarium (rehearsal and instrument storage room) of the Percussions de Strasbourg. Two workshops are open to everyone and are available at very reasonable prices to residents of the so-called priority neighbourhoods of the Eurometropole (QPV), with no pre-requisites or musical experience necessary. The other four workshops are conducted with a school audience, as part of educational accompaniment with two classes from the Erasme and Truffaut secondary schools, and two classes from the Jacqueline and Brigitte elementary schools, in partnership with the Erasme and Truffaut priority education networks, the JEEP association and the Cité Éducative.
Percustra – 2023 season
This season’s Percustra workshops will take you into the world of composer Hugues Dufourt through his piece “Sombre Journée”, composed for the Percussions de Strasbourg in 1979, which plays on the distorting mirroring of flows, densities and acoustic volumes.
Led by Thibaut Weber and Hyoungkwon Gil, soloists of the ensemble, in the instrumentarium of the Percussions de Strasbourg (rehearsal and storage room for instruments), these workshops end with a concert on the stage of the Théâtre de Hautepierre, an opportunity for the participants to show the work they have done throughout the year in professional conditions. Designed as a place of experimentation and discovery, these workshops will allow you to create your own musical language. Come and develop your creativity and let yourself be surprised!

Percustra pedagogy
The Percustra pedagogy was invented and developed by the founders of the Percussions de Strasbourg, with the help of Pierre Boulez, at the beginning of the 1970s, and has since been disseminated throughout the world. It stimulates the creative potential of each individual through a collective pedagogical approach that aims to break away from academic patterns.
Percustra’s objective is to open the art of percussion to a wide audience. Beginners, amateur or professional musicians, children and adults discover a music that expresses itself on all media, where creative freedom – sound and gesture – prevails over academic constraints.
Percustra is an active and collective approach to music; perceptive notions such as listening, breathing and pulsation are put into perspective. For a long time, Percustra’s approach favoured the performance of existing works (some of which are borrowed from the ensemble’s repertoire) as well as the performance of works written to measure for a group identified by a composer (through a commission). From now on, Percustra is nourished by the composition of the participants: any personal idea of a student can be integrated into the collective work, the teacher (a musician of the ensemble) rewriting or adapting the score throughout the workshop.
In June 2022, the Percustra concert was part of the Percussions de Strasbourg anniversary festival. To celebrate this, Szenik followed us throughout this series of events and interviewed our participants:
