We are in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, which has become a haven for climate refugees. Longing for the cheerful bingo games of their homeland, the French working-class community gathers every Saturday in their neighbourhood’s bingo hall in the hope of winning a prize that might bring some relief to their bleak daily lives. Under the guidance of Annikki, the host, the numbers are called out like a reassuring litany… and then… the music.
Ordinary lives begin to resonate together.
A humble celebration, as the author calls it, where the mundane rubs shoulders with collective enthusiasm, where sadness and joy are inextricably intertwined.
Bingo is reinvented through a musical style that is popular, funny, offbeat and full of humanity. The beat becomes the dramatic driving force, the dance a space of liberation – a refuge as much as a celebration. Ironic and tender, Diskoteekki is a choral, sensitive and exhilarating show that celebrates the power of the group and the ever-present need to come together to dance, sing – and persevere.
