"De la vitesse" attempts to reunit two ways of listening and conceiving of music. The establishment and exploitation of "figures" puts the discursive emphasis on what we commonly call ’writing’ or ’argument’ (’écriture’). On the other hand, the creation of a sonic continuum where the notion of material is dominant is a more contemplative approach to sound. ’De la vitesse’ is founded on a continual coming and going between figure and material, which is established by an intermediary process of more or less continual transformation. When a figure changes scale, becoming much slower, for example, it takes on the nature of material. By its condensation, this material gives birth, in its own time, to a new figure. The figure propagates itself into a barely heard sonic continuum, as the wave produced by a stone thrown into water influences the fate of the stone. "De la vitesse" does not seek to be a contemplative work, nor the sonic materialisation of an abstract argument, but rather, sonic writing, the writing of sounds, sounds writing (’écriture de sons’).
